REVIEW: Peppermint Hot Chocolate -McDonald’s, Tim Hortons, Starbucks

I love mint. Any kind of mint. I also love chocolate. Mix the two and of course you’ve got my favourite holiday drink – aside from eggnog of course, but that’s another post.

It looks like the rest of the world is catching on to the chocolatey peppermint glory, so I’m in no short supply! So, here are (arguably) the biggest three places you can find it in Calgary, and how they measure up against my standards:

1. Tim Hortons

I had high hopes for this one, with me being Canadian and all, and I was let down. To be fair, I may have to give it a second try. The employee who made mine was quite new and had to ask another how to make it.

It was just… bland. It had a very mild mint flavour, only noticeable more towards the bottom of the cup and that’s just not what I want out of a peppermint hot chocolate. I want it to be bold. I want to be punched square in the face by peppermint.

Even the hot chocolate itself tasted bland. It was very smooth, but lacking in taste.

Also there was no whipped cream, a must for this beverage.

2. McDonald’s

Picked this one up from the drive through so it had a lid on. The moment I opened that lid though-

P E P P E R M I N T

That beautiful scent hit my nose like an old friend.

The flavour still wasn’t as strong as I’d personally like, but it was distinctly chocolate and distinctly peppermint and I was distinctly satisfied.

The whipped cream on top with the red and green sprinkles was a very nice touch.

3. Starbucks

Starbucks has always been my go-to for this festive drink. The little chocolate shavings on top of the whip cream make it just that little bit more classy. Overall it’s richer, and smoother, and feels less like a mix hot chocolate.

(Probably because it’s not.)

Honestly, Starbuck’s downfall is their crazy prices. I feel like you don’t always get your money’s worth. (I’m looking at you, Peah Green Tea Lemonade)

But for delicious, decadent peppermint and chocolate flavour, this is one thing I’m willing to fork over my own money for – not just get when I have a giftcard.
